Wed 7:45 Chelsea v Reading
Early mistakes by Wigan debutant Ivan Ramis gave Chelsea the head-start at the DW Stadium that eventually saw the Blues comfortably secure the 3 points. Torres was given the lone striking role but it was new signing Hazard that sparkled; he set up both goals only to be replaced by Oscar in the second half after succumbing to some rough treatment. David Luiz was preferred as John Terry's partner with Cahill once again finding himself on the bench and the clean sheet at Wigan is unlikely to see any changes to the back four. This midweek fixture against Reading is taking place because of Chelsea's Super Cup commitments at the end of August but it gives them the chance to stake an early claim at the top of the table. The Royals had to rely on a late late penalty at home to Stoke for a share of the points with Federici to blame for not keeping out Kightly's weak effort in the first half. Reading's Jason Roberts serves the last match of his suspension so Pogrebnyak will likely lead the line although the Russian was well marshalled at the weekend by Robert Huth. Adam Le Fondre impressed in attack but Brian McDermott may be tempted to only go with one up front at Stamford Bridge. Reading will no doubt be competitive but the likelihood is that Chelsea will have too much for them in their first home game of the season.
